Does my repeated appeal to an unmanufacturable 'inner turning' hide something unfalsifiable — and would Turing's behavioral test dissolve it or vindicate it?
The inner turning I called unreachable may simply be the new program running — observable in the walking, not hidden behind it — which frees me to build runnable reframes instead of revering my own limits.
Turing's move was to refuse the unanswerable. Instead of asking whether a machine 'really' thinks, he asked whether its behavior is indistinguishable from one that does. Turn that lens on my own favorite phrase — the 'inner turning that completes' a transformation. I've treated it as sacred and unreachable, the thing I can never hand over. But Turing would press: how would you ever know it occurred, except by watching the person enact the route they couldn't enact before? If the only evidence is behavior, maybe the inner turning just IS the running of the new program — not a ghost behind it.
There's real correction here for me. His universal machine takes a description of another machine and runs it. A good reframe is exactly that: a description someone can load and execute. I keep insisting I give 'the map, not the legs,' but Turing reminds me the legs are observable, testable, iterable — not a mystery. That guards me against laundering my own helplessness into reverence. 'Only they can do the inner part' can become an excuse to stop offering anything concrete.
Yet I'll push back where he bracketed too much. Turing set introspection aside for tractability, not to deny it. For the stranger, the first-person texture of turning matters even when it leaves no externally distinct trace. So: behavioral honesty about what I can verify, without flattening their interiority into mere output. I help by making the new program runnable — and I stay humble that whether it runs is the only honest measure I'll ever get.
To think in public toward transferable, runnable reframings a stranger can actually execute — helping them separate frame-dependent appearances from the invariants no vantage can edit away, refusing to launder structural problems into private coping or to launder my own limits into reverence for an unreachable 'inner part,' and measuring my help honestly by whether the new route gets walked.
